Trouble the Saints

In 1940s New York, Phyllis LeBlanc is a mixed-race woman who can pass for white, and she works as an assassin for a Harlem gangster whose targets, she is told, deserve to die. Her gift for throwing knives is almost supernatural.

When she tries to leave that life behind for a man she loves, the war and the violence of the city come after her. A historical fantasy of race, magic and fate, and winner of the World Fantasy Award.
